A few weeks ago, my mentor gifted me a book called Texas Criminal Procedure and the Offender with Mental Illness- Fourth Edition by Brian D. Shannon and Daniel H. Benson. Ever since I received the book, I have been slowly working my way through it. The analysis and guide is written by two Professors of Law from Texas Tech University School of Law for the National Alliance on Mental Illness- Texas through a grant from the Texas Bar Foundation. The guide has four main sections: the Process Subsequent to Arrest, Competency to Stand Trial, the Insanity Defense, and Post-Conviction Issues. Though I have not finished the book, what I have read so far has been interesting and has served as a refresher of what I learned last year with Dr. Dunn. This book is significant and much needed because nowadays, there are more mentally ill individuals in jails and prisons than in mental state hospitals. Understanding this subject more is crucial especially in my field of study, Indigent Defense. I highly reccomend reading it if you are interested in the law pertaining to those with mental illnesses.
