The curtains rise, the scene is set, and the actors on stage begin to perform an intricate, synchronized performance. Some compare such performances as dances, because of the amount of coordination and thought put into every action. For others, this dance reminds them of something in a completely different realm. Networking. Officially, it is defined as "[interacting] with other people to exchange information and develop contacts, especially to further one's career." However, networking is its own dance, its own performance.

When you make eye contact with an individual, smile and approach the person. Make sure to walk confidently to prevent looking timid but never walk too confidently or you might seem arrogant or cocky. When smiling, make sure to find a balance, not too much teeth but you still should a few. When you finally arrive in front of the person, come to a graceful stop at an acceptable distance. Now, while introducing yourself with energy injected into your voice, give the professional a firm handshake with your right hand. Next make meaningful small talk. Unmeaningful small talk includes comments about the weather, or the architecture of the building. On the other hand, during meaningful small talk individuals will ask relevant questions about who the other person is, their interests, and what they do........

Honestly, I could go on forever detailing the ritual we call networking. Though intricate, business networking is an important skill to have or at least practice. This week, those in the ISM program will be practicing this at Business Symposium. So wish me luck while I rehearse and prepare for these nervewracking social interactions.
