As I have mentioned in an earlier post, I have researched various psychiatric medications I've come across during my mentor visits and readings. So far, I've looked into multiple anti-psychotic medications, and benzodiazepines, to list a few. Today, I would like to hi-light another one of the important anti-psychotic drugs I have learned about.
Thorazine is an antipsychotic medication which is used in psychiatric settings for various reasons. Its generic name is chlorpromazine, which is difficult to remember and say. Thorazine is administered to those suffering from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, hallucination, manic depression, severe behavioral issues, vomiting, nausea, anxiety, mood disorders. Additionally, chlorpromazine helps individuals think more clearly, feel less nervous, take part in everyday life, reduce aggressive behavior and prevents suicidal tendencies. However, as useful as the drug is, there are additional side effects of thorazine. Some side effects are dizziness, lightheadedness, muscle spasms, seizure, weight gain, constipation, dry mouth, orthostatic hypotension, insomnia, trouble swallowing. Thorazine can also cause severe illnesses and disorders such as heart failure, tardive dyskinesia, pneumonia, and arrhythmia. Unfortunately, like many other antipsychotic disorders, this medication increases the risk of death in those with dementia.
I do plan on blogging about the numerous other medications I have learned about each individually in future posts.
