Independent Study and Mentoship, otherwise known as ISM. So far, we have conducted research and interviews to gain knowledge on our field of study. Now, that the first half of ISM has been mostly completed (not that we will ever stop researching and learning new information) we have slowly started to transition into the second portion of ISM. Now, we have begun focusing on the Mentorship aspect of the program. Mentoship is when an individual pursuing a certain field finds a mentor in their specific field of story. After finding a mentor, the student has meetings with them or shadow them at work to gain exposure to the field. The difficult part of this process is the most important part: finding a mentor. This is especially hard because many potential mentors will refuse a request for mentorship for a plethora of reasons. Additonally, asking different professionals can be very nerve racking, especially for a high school student.
Luckily for me, I was able to secure a mentor on my first try and did not have to go searching around. After the interview with Dr. Dunn, I knew I could learn a lot about Forensic Psychiatry. So during Thanksgiving week, I contacted him with my request for a mentorship and he replied back about half an hour later! I will add a mini biography of my mentor later on, so stick around!
