Giving speeches is a important part of being a effective communicator. Recently, I gave my first research speech on the field of Forensic Psychiatry. Now, many of you may be thinking that giving a speech may not be hard, but giving a ten minute one is. I was absolutley terrified that I wouldn't be able to eloquently deliver a speech with enough content to make those time requirements. However, when I got up there, it truly wasn't that bad. I was not only able to speak for ten minutes, but I went over and ended up speaking for thirteen. When you give a speech about a subject you know well, it is easy to present the information. If however, an individual decided to give a speech with barely any preperation or effort, the speech is bound to be terrible. Of course I am not a perfect speaker and after delivering it I gor some critiques. I have learnt that I need to work on stronger openings andclosings and work on moving a bit more effectively. This bascially means that I should use body movement to emphasize my points. One thing however that I was extremely proud about was my lack of using many crutch words. If there is anything you should learn to become a better public speaker is to learn from your mistakes and continue to solidify the areas where you are strong in.
