Last week was very eventful for me on the medical portion of my studies. To be a forensic psychiatrist I must go through medical school because a psychiatrist a type of medical doctor. That is where the class Health Science II comes in. It's a well organized and coordinated class that allows me to experience the medical field first hand. Although none of our rotations allow us to explore the Psychiatry field, I have been able to experience other interesting fields.
The week started off on Monday, with me having to take my CNA exam to become officially certified as a Nurse Aide. While the test portion of the test was not too difficult, the skills portion was absoolutely nerve racking. The skills part is the hardest becasue the state gives you about twenty skills to memorize step by step. Some of the skills have lots of step and the order cannot be messed up. Then on test day, the test administrator ask you to perform five of the twenty. Everyone is asked to perform handwashing because its a important skill, but the other ones I was asked to do were foot care, measuring weigh, catheter care, and denture care. Thankfully, I finished the test and passed!
The second exciting part of the week hhas been the start of our hospital clinical rotations. On Tuesday, I was in a pre- and post-op wing and on Thursday, I was set to work in the Emergency Room. That was especially great first day in the ER because it was very busy and hectic when we arrived so we were able to do and see some interesting things. We hooked people up to the heart monitor, took vitals, helped put on gowns while someone else grabbed shears and cut the patients clothes off, and we were even able to watch a physician's assistant perform stitches on a patient with two deep cuts. Although we did'nt see and GSW's or anything similar, it was still a good day. Mostly because we didn't get stuck making beds.
