I recently interviewed a professor in psychology from the University of North Texas and he gave me a lot of crucial advice, especially when it came to the subject of reading. No, he did not try to instill better reading habits in me like many English teachers attempt to do, but instead he advised me on WHAT to read. First things first. Online journals are a joke in the intellectual community. Although they do have research articles, they don't have the credibility to impress anyone who knows what they're talking about. Instead, subscribe to journals that come in the mail or if you can't do that, go to a library and see if they have any. Some of the journals he recommended were on the subject matter of behavioral science and criminal justice, and psychological public policy.

Secondly, as a professor, he has published multiple books and he told me about them. The topics that his books cover were truly fascinating. The one subject however that caught my eye was the book about his ongoing study on variations in Miranda Rights. Although, I had absolutely no knowledge of many of these books, his explanation of the topics really spiked my attention. That's another thing to note. Read about subjects you find interesting and want to learn more about, because scientific articles and books tend to be long and tedious. Without the passion and yearning to learn about it, reading becomes exhaustive and boring. Now I know many of you all are denying the fact that you sometimes try to read scientific articles about things you could care less about, but don't do that. The main reason many of us do this is to seem impressive, however we don't end up looking impressive. It has quite the opposite effect usually. That's because while we fell over dying from disinterest, we ended up not understanding what we were reading which then in turn reflects on us. Honestly, nearly half of the times, it comes back to bite us.
