On Friday, the first major event of the Independent Study of Mentorship took place. The Business Symposium is an event that is held every year where professionals from various fields gather to socialize and help ISM students practice networking and interviewing skills that are crucial for the real world.
So all of the ISM students woke up at 6:00 AM and got dressed in their most professional outfits and headed over to the Symposium. There, we got the opportunity to talk to students from other schools in the ISM program and discuss the interesting journey. Soon after that, we got greet the professionals and make small talk. Although I wasn't able to meet a significant amount of people, I was able to have interesting discussions with some great people. I talked to a insurance analytics worker, a finance recruiter, the principal of my high school, and even a board member of our school district.
After the socializing was done, we had the opportunity to hear a great speech about how to market yourself through social media and resumes. Next, we were able to ask ISM Alumni questions about their journey in high school and how the program affected them in college. One of the alumni members is currently going through pre-med so it was beneficial to hear her advice on how to get there. The second one, also in college, got to share his story about how his mentorship continued into college and how he was able to learn more and even have research published.
Overall, the Business Symposium passed by in a flash. While all of us were nervous in the beginning, the fast pace of the symposium left us no time to even think about being nervous. Which is good. Because everything went very smoothly.
