Loma Linda Mannequin, much fancier than our mannequins but you get the picture.

This week I had a first of many. One of the most unique and most fantastic things about my school district is the fact that they have stellar and well developed career classes ad programs. On top of ISM, I applied for the district's Health Science Program. For newcomers, the health science program allows students wanting to explore the medical field more in depth knowledge and hands on experience. The most interesting part is obviously the hands on portion of the class. To gain experience the class trains us to become Certified Nurses Aides or CNAs. In class, we practice in a mock hospital room with beds, mannequins as patients, and various medical equipments (I'll try to get pictures, its super neat). We learn skills from washing our hands properly to providing catheter care for a female mannequin. Additionally, we get sent to hospitals, medical centers, nursing homes, and fire stations for ambulance ride ons.

Our first rotation was at a nursing home in the city. I would honestly love to tell you all that I had the most exhilarating and action packed visit but I can't. And even if I had, I wouldnt be able to tell you specifics for confidentality reasons and all. But the first day was the best first day any CNA in training could have asked for. It may have been a slow day, but it was honestly very down to earth. We made beds for residents, took meal orders, refilled water mugs and had nice conversations with a few of the residents. It gave me a perspective of what a normal day would look like, which is very, very different from TV. There were absolutely no codes called.

Overall, I believe this year will be very beneficial. I won't just be learning about the medical field, but I'll also be putting my knowledge to use. In the long run, it will help me figure out if the medical field is right for me. So far, it is.
